タクシーがせせこましい国道を右折すると、レンガ色の瀟洒なホテルに到着した。すぐそこには国道が見えるが騒音は気にならない。水を打ったようなまではいかないが静けさが広がっていた。
ドライバーに幾ばくかのチップを上乗せし渡して、スーツケースを受け取るとホテルに入った。間口はそれほど大きくはない。都内にあるビジネスホテルといったところか。
フロントとロビーもそれほど広いわけではなく、アットホームな雰囲気が漂っていた。だが、パリッとした制服を着たドアマンが玄関口で出迎えてくれた。ホテルでは当然のホスピタリティーで、自分の荷物をフロントまで持っていこうとしていたので、もちろん何にも言葉には出せずほとんど大袈裟な手振りだけで申し出を拒否した。正直、尻込みしていたのといくらチップを渡していいのかわからなかった。
ひとりで向かったフロントでは、営業用の笑顔を振りまいているフロントマンが対応してくれた。
「私どものホテルにようこそ」．．．などと云ってくれたのかもしれない。もしくは揉み手で迎えてくれたのかもしれないが、彼の笑顔を見るだけが関の山で自分には彼の所作を確認する余裕はまったくなかった。
「ハロー」
ボクはそう云って早速ホテルの予約票とパスポートを恐る恐る差し出す。
びびっていたのだ。なぜなら、その予約票には会社の手違いだか旅行会社の手違いだかわからないが、自分のファーストネームが間違って書かれており、差し出したパスポートのそれと違っていたのだ（しつこいようだがそれくらいの英語は読める）。
彼の顔から笑顔が消え、ボクが出した予約票とパスポートをじっと見つめている。
「ゴクリ．．．」
深い谷底に落とされたような沈黙が流れた。ボクは固唾を呑んで身構えた。そのときの１分ぐらいの時間が自分には５分も１０分もの時間に感じられた。
そんな心配は杞憂に過ぎなかった．．．。
内心、「ゴー・アウェイ！！」とホテルを締め出しを喰らうのではとビクついていたが結末は何とも呆気なかった．．．（どこまで被害妄想なんだ．．．。だが異国の地でひとりというものは案外心細いものなのだよ。）。
フロントマンはようやく予約票から目線をボクに移すと涼しげな顔で「ＯＫ！」と云い、追い返す代わりにすぐに宿泊カードを出してくれた。彼が何事か云っているようだが、やっぱり早口なのでよくわからない。宿泊カードに書くジェスチャーをすると頷き返してくれたので、必要事項の記入を済ますと（もちろん英語で．．．）、ルームキーを受け取った。話せない自分にとって身振り手振りのジェスチャーは非常に有効であることをここでやっと気づかされた。
牧歌的で手狭な１階に比べると部屋は案外広かった．．．。
寝室がひとつとリビング。そして簡単な調理ができるキッチンまで付帯していた。その上に寝室のベッドはキングサイズ。ひとりで来たボクには十分過ぎるくらい広く大きすぎた。
ボクは荷解きもせず、取るものもとりあえず、ひとまずベッドに大の字に仰向けになった。柔らかく包み込まれそうなベッドに体を沈めると、そのまま眠りにつけそうな感じだった。そうなのだ。仕事、仕事の毎日で徹夜が続いたこと、機内の場をわきまえないイノセントな子供らが発していたノイズとの格闘したこと、シャトルバスを待っているとき背中にツーと嫌な汗が流れるような緊張感を味わったことなどが重なって、疲労度はピークに達しているはずだ。目を瞑るとまぶたの裏に、成田からここに着くまでの様々な出来事が浮かんでは消えていく。興奮冷めやらぬという感じだ。体は疲れているはずなのに不思議と眠気はない。というより目が冴えてくる。高速道路を運転したその晩に眠るとき、道路をひた走る映像が頭から離れず寝付けないのと似ていた。不眠症ではないが、これが時差ぼけというヤツかもしれない。
目を開けると、日本のホテルより高い天井が目に飛び込んでくる。今何時だろう．．．。空港に着いてからアメリカ時間に調整し直した腕時計に目を落とした。午後２時少し前．．．。日本との時差は１５時間だから、次の日の午前５時の明け方だ。日本では次の日でアメリカはその前日。少し得した気分になった。差し詰め「バック・トゥー・ザ・フューチャー」のデロリアンに乗ってタイムスリップしたというところか。しかし、しかし、待てよ。アメリカはサマータイムがあるから本当はその１時間前の午前４時のはずだ。いやいや、１時間遅れの午前６時だったけ。考えれば考えるほどドツボにはまり、ループから抜け出せなくなりそうだ。頭が混乱してショートしかけてくる。なおさら眠れず目が冴えてきた。
ボクは首を振った。
気を取り直して思考のベクトルを変えてみることにした。成田空港ので駆け込みで購入した「地球の歩き方」のことを思い出した。メジャーでないミネアポリスのページは少なくそれほど情報が多くはなかったが、確かどこかに重要なことが書いてあったような記憶があったのだ。ボクはムクリと起き上がって、急いでスーツケースを開け、「地球の歩き方」を取り出した。
ブックマークされたミネアポリスのページをさっそく開いた。そこには『時差ぼけを防ぐために「モール・オブ・アメリカ」に行くべし．．．』と魔法の呪文のようにそう記述されていた。
ボクはその一文に心躍らされた。
これは額面どおり受け取って、乗っかるしかないだろう。まあ、実際は時差ぼけ気味だがまだまだ遅くない。それに何のために先乗りして来たのだ。こうなったら善は急げだ。
疲れはどこ吹く風で、ボクは出発の準備を始めた。
「うぁあ」
目の当たりにしたボクは思わず感嘆の声を上げた．．．。
アメリカ最大のショッピングモールに度胆を抜かれた。スケールの大きさが半端ではなかった。
今では日本でも一般的になっているシネコンなどが入った複合商業施設がその頃なかったものだから、初めて東京に来たお登りさんのようにモールに圧倒された。しかし、日本になかったからということを差っ引いても、アメリカ一の規模なのだからスケールの違いに驚いても無理はない。日本の面積の２５倍以上も誇るアメリカ大陸には腐るほど土地が有り余っているのだから．．．。アメリカはとにかくナンバー１が好きな国であることをつくづく感じた。
ホテルから「モール・オブ・アメリカ」へタクシーで来たのだが、恐らく「モール・オブ・アメリカ」という文字を英語で書いて、手振り身振りに加えて足振りも交えて、勢いでフロントに頼み込んだのだろう（さらにしつこいようだが、それぐらいは英語で書ける）。まったく覚えていないのだが、勢いとは恐ろしいものである。
ショッピングモールを覆おう空からの午後の陽射しも眩しかったが、凛とそびえ立つ巨大な建物の後光の強さによろめきそうになった。と、同時にボクは桁違いの感覚に色めき立った．．．．。
